Who I am

A bit about me… and I refuse to write in the third person. I’ve been working in online news pretty much since graduation from journalism school at Carleton University in 1999.

It started with the adrenaline fix. Breaking news. Scooping everyone else online. Then I moved into building features, adding to the weekend reads.

Somewhere along the line, everything shifted – and news organizations started thinking about the web first, and I started thinking about what I can do online separately, not just how it can complement something in print.

I started using Twitter, Facebook, Google+ – the platforms our readers are using. We are no longer broadcasting on the Internet… we’re sharing.

Journalism is no longer a byline on A1 and 1,800 sharply crafted words. It’s an idea, it’s data visualization, crowd sourcing, it’s story-telling … en masse.

The game has changed. And the adrenaline flows faster than ever.

I’m now teaching at Carleton, as well working online at Ottawacitizen.com. I like where journalism is headed, and this space is my opportunity to look ahead.

Consider it my news sked for digital journalism.
